Are IKEA Kitchen Cabinets Actually Cheaper? An Honest Look

IKEA is where most people start when they want a kitchen that does not cost $40,000. That is a reasonable place to start. The cabinets are decent, the design tool is free, and the sticker price is genuinely low.

The question is whether the sticker price is the real price. Usually it is not, and the gap is not small.

Here is what an IKEA kitchen actually costs by the time you are cooking in it, and when it is still the right call.

Are IKEA cabinets actually cheaper?

The cabinets, yes. The kitchen, often not.

IKEA prices cabinets as separate parts. A base cabinet is one price. The doors are another. Drawer fronts, handles, hinges, legs and toe kicks are all priced on their own. The number you see on the shelf edge is rarely the number that leaves the store.

Then there is everything that is not in the box at all:

Assembly, unless you are building every cabinet yourself
Installation
Countertops, in most cases
Backsplash
Delivery
Any plumbing or electrical work

Once those are added, an IKEA kitchen in Canada usually lands somewhere in the low to mid teens of thousands of dollars, finished. That is a real kitchen at a fair price. It is just not the number people have in their head when they walk out of the showroom.

What is the average cost of IKEA kitchen cabinets?

For the cabinets and doors alone, a typical kitchen usually falls somewhere in the low-to-mid thousands, depending on how many units you need and which door range you pick. IKEA runs a kitchen event a few times a year that takes a meaningful percentage off, and most people buy then.

That figure covers boxes, doors and hardware. It does not cover countertops, assembly, installation or delivery.

The useful question is not what the cabinets cost. It is what the finished kitchen costs. Ask any company for that number and see how quickly they give it to you.

Is Home Depot or IKEA cheaper for cabinets?

IKEA is usually cheaper on the cabinets themselves. Home Depot carries a wider range of styles and offers more in-stock options for immediate pickup.

Both leave you in the same position on the parts that cost the most: you are still arranging installation, countertops and the trades yourself, and you are still the person holding it together when the counter template does not match the cabinet run.

That coordination is the hidden cost of buying kitchens this way. It is not on any quote and it is where most of the stress lives.

Where IKEA genuinely wins

The design tool is excellent. Free, easy, and you can plan your whole kitchen at midnight without booking anything.

Small kitchens. For a compact galley or a condo kitchen with under ten units, IKEA is hard to beat on price.

If you are genuinely handy. If you can assemble flat-pack, level cabinets and hang doors properly, you save thousands. Some people can. Most people who think they can have not done a full kitchen before.

Rentals and flips. When it needs to look good and be cheap, and you are not the one living with it for fifteen years.

Where it does not

The doors are the weak point. IKEA boxes are respectable. The doors on the lower ranges are where the cost saving shows, and they are what you touch every day.

Assembly is a real job. A full kitchen is dozens of cabinets. People underestimate this consistently.

Nobody owns the outcome. You buy from IKEA, an installer fits it, someone else does the counters. When something does not line up, you are the one making phone calls.

Long-term wear. Hinges and runners on the lower ranges do not age like European hardware does. Five years of a family kitchen tells you which is which.

The honest test is what your time is worth and how much coordination you want to own. There is no wrong answer, but there is a wrong assumption, and it is that the cabinet price is the kitchen price.
